Shirasaya and tsunagi

Making shirasaya and tsunagi

Both are made from Japanese magnolia wood and designed for a specific blade. The Japanese tradition requires the use of only natural materials, with the valves glued together with rice paste and lacquer deriving from tree resin. Given the type of blade, the frame has been designed for one-handed use, with shorter tsuka. At the end of the saya the kamon Sakura was made. For the lacquering, successive layers of ki urushi were applied. The tsunagi is imprinted on a blade and habaki and is usually used when a blade is accompanied by several mounts. The togi intervention was performed, as per the dictates of the Japanese tradition, through the use of successive gradually finer-grained stones
