
Edo period iron tsuba with gold decorations
Tsuba from the Edo period, mid-1700s, made of iron with gold details. Maru gata, tapered maru mimi, jitetsu is soft with a granular finish. On the omote side there is a portrait of a nobleman on horseback crossing a river while an attendant retrieves a fallen casket from the waters. On the ura side there is a dragon, ryu, a mythological symbol linked to water and abundance.
